GABA has known to have numerous positive effects on the human brain. Earlier medicines which would initiate the activity of GABA were given when there was a need for an inhibitory action. Now GABA is available in powder, tablet or capsule form. It is used for treatment of various neurological disorders like ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), anxiety, and depression among others.
Anxiety and Stress: Anxiety is the feeling of constant worry, or feeling of doom that seems to spell disaster on all activities you plan to do. This can become overwhelming and make daily life a struggle. Anxiety is not only a matter of a certain feeling, it can manifest a couple of physical effects that can in turn affect a peaceful life. Stress plays a major role in these anxiety disorders. Studies suggest that anxiety is the function of certain activities occurring in the brain. It is not something a person can try and control consciously. GABA has shown to decrease stress and anxiety levels in patients. It is believed to block neural impulses and hence result in calming down people suffering from stress and anxiety.
Depression: Intense sadness, feelings of worthlessness, thoughts of death and suicide that remain for more than two weeks are signs of a depressed person. When depression occurs as a mania, fluctuating between extreme happiness and extreme sadness, it is a condition called Bipolar syndrome. It has been proven that in people suffering from depression and bipolar polar syndrome, the amount of GABA in plasma is low. Supplements can help to increase the amount of GABA in blood.
Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS): PMS causes physical and psychological effects in a woman a few days prior to her periods. During the menstrual cycles, all women experience hormonal changes but some are more affected. It may lead them to feeling depressed, sad, angry and during this time the GABA in their blood plasma is found to be extremely low. It is suggested that GABA supplements can help women feel better during this time.
Male infertility: In today’s fast moving world, more and more people are struggling from infertility issues. It is becoming more and more common. Male infertility can be due to various reasons like low sperm motility or low sperm count or even an unhealthy sperm. A few studies have suggested that GABA makes the sperms hyperactive and hence can be used to treat male infertility related to motility.
Diabetes: The pancreas have cells called beta cells which responsible for producing the hormone insulin. This hormone is responsible for breaking down glucose and giving energy to cells. In some cases, either the immune system wipes out these beta cells or they are destroyed by some disease or injury to the pancreas. This causes diabetes, a condition in which the body is unable to synthesize glucose on its own. 2-4 gms of GABA are believed to stimulate insulin production and consequently lower sugar levels in the blood.
