Meningitis


Meningitis:

Meningitis is a viral or bacterial infection, causing inflammation of membranes surrounding the brain.

Bacterial meningitis:
It can be caused by a number of organisms – the most common are meningococcal meningitis, pneumococcol Meningitis and homophilus meningitis .E coil Meningitis occurs mainly in new-born infants. The symptoms of bacterial meningitis are fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, intolerance of bright lights and vomiting. The speed of onset depends on the infecting organism-tubercular meningitis has a gradual onset.
Meningococcal meningitis is particularly rapid and can cause sudden collapse and the rapid appearance of a rash looking like lapse and the rapid appearance of a rash looking like small bruises or blood blisters. Antibiotic therapy must be started with utmost urgency.

Viral meningitis: can be caused by a great number of viruses. The symptoms are similar but less severe than those of bacterial meningitis. Spontaneous recovery can be expected without specific treatment.
